I am looking into a distributed hosting system, much like a distributed version control system, where each installation of the DB could share data with every other installation. This would allow guilds to run their own DB in custom look and feel while stil sharing data with the community.

Yes, and it might be an option. The most important thing after all is to provide a good user experience. The last time I tried Mono on Mac OS X this was not the case though. :-(

I can provide all the data you need with an open API. Currently I can get that data, and more. E.g. the texts spoken by NPCs can be made available, too. If there is anything besides the data you named, just keep it coming. I'll see if I can expose the data.

All help is welcome. As I use Git for development, I will soon push my initial code for client and server to github.

Thus everyone interested in joining the project - whether it is for designing the site, or for contributing code / data - can register on github and take part in the project.

My friend and I actually just started working on something similar, and it looks like you have pretty much beat us to the punch.

I would love to help you develop your DB. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Lua is not an acronym, it is the Portuguese word for moon so you should not capatalize it when spelling it (a pedantic point, but one the authors have asked us to say something about when we see it).

As for what my addons need, I need to be able to access the information about each of the quests, npcs and ideally items but the most important part for me is the comments section. For quests I collect the following:

The Start/End locations/npcs

Any items that are provided

Any rewards (spells, items, reputation, gold, experience)

Quests that are related in a series

But in reality, I currently parse every bit of information I can obtain from wowhead, which is quite a bit.

I've spent a lot of time debating the benefits of various cross platform libraries (I'm a Windows/Linux guy, hope to get into OS X once the new Mac Mini refresh comes about) and as far as C++ frameworks go I'm a big fan of Qt. It's not only a GUI toolkit, it has support for everything from sockets to databases. The licensing is such that you can use the open source version of the framework if you're doing open source development (which it appears you are). If Qt isn't an option I'd recommend looking into wxWidgets for the GUI. They're both really nice cross platform frameworks that use the windowing system's default controls (or at least try to mimic them, I honestly haven't looked that deep into how they look. I just like the functionality).

You should host it on Amazon EC2 (http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/) or use Simple DB (http://aws.amazon.com/simpledb/) to keep the costs down and be infinitely scalable
